Even after the competitive entry of the iPhone in 2007 and GoogleвЂ™s Android OS in 2008, BlackBerry was certainly not destined for failure. Over the ensuing decade, the BlackBerry became the device of choice in corporate America due to its enterprise-level security and business functionality. In 2000, the company introduced its first mobile phone product in the BlackBerry 957, which came with functionality for push email and internet. BlackBerry was founded in 1984 (as Research in Motion) and was originally a developer of connectivity technology like modems and pagers. How did BlackBerry fall from such soaring heights?ДЇirst, a little bit of history. Today, BlackBerry has 0% share of the smartphone market and has a stock price that has hovered in the high single digits for most of the past few years. At its peak, Blackberry owned over 50% of the US and 20% of the global smartphone market, sold over 50 million devices a year, had its device referred to as the вЂњCrackBerryвЂќ, and boasted a stock price of over $230. At the same time, corporations began turning to Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policies rather than strictly limiting which work phones people could use.In many ways, BlackBerry was the producer of the worldвЂ™s first widely-adopted premium smartphone brand.

But as 4G and LTE networks began rolling out, consumers started turning to devices that offered multimedia and convenience features that BlackBerry didnвЂ™t - notably, capacitive touch screens and more advancedВ third-party apps. BlackBerry was focused on growing its international market and believed business customers would prefer devices with physical keyboards, security features, and minimum bandwidth requirements to deliver services like email. BlockbusterвЂ™s failure to adapt to Netflix is one example, and BlackBerryвЂ™s failure to respond to Apple and the rise of Android was another. A well-established company with a dominant business model fails to anticipate the potential for new technology or services to upend its entire market. The companyвЂ™s fall from grace is an excellent example of whatвЂ™s sometimes called the InnovatorвЂ™s Dilemma. Not even Matt SmithвЂ™s amazing cheekbones or the DoctorвЂ™s time travel could save the BlackBerry Storm (seen here, sans BB branding). BlackBerry may release a few more branded handsets, but itвЂ™s smartphone business is dead. No information was provided in Q2 or Q3 about smartphone shipments, but the declining revenue and lack of investor interest prove the point. In Q3 FY 2017 not one analyst asked about BlackBerryвЂ™s hardware sales or pivot towards Android. In its Q2 FY 2017 call, the question of Android security relative to BB10 was briefly discussed, with one analyst noting that BlackBerryвЂ™s вЂњhighly regulatedвЂќ customers didnвЂ™t see Android as an acceptable substitute for BB10. The companyвЂ™s earnings calls further support the idea that its smartphone hardware is effectively dead, regardless of whether it runs Android or BB10. In Q3 of FY 2017, BlackBerryвЂ™s вЂњHardware & OtherвЂќ revenue had fallen to $62 million. By Q1 2017, that had fallen to $152 million. In Q1 of BlackBerryвЂ™s fiscal year 2016, the company recorded $269 million worth of revenue in its вЂњHardware & OtherвЂќ category. I was curious to see if BlackBerry had said anything about its own Android sales, so I pulled the companyвЂ™s financial data and earnings call transcripts.

Furthermore, even if we assume BlackBerryвЂ™s Android devices outsold its BB10 devices by 3:1, that still leaves the company with a global market share of 0.19% - significantly below Windows Phone, of all things.Д«lackBerryвЂ™s market share through CY 2015. All indications suggest that the Priv sold poorly relative to BlackBerryвЂ™s expectations (and even its CEO has said the phone was overpriced relative to the rest of the market). This might seem like a dodge, since we donвЂ™t know how many Android devices BlackBerry sold during the same period, but I donвЂ™t think it is. Out of 432 million devices shipped in Q4 2016, just 207,900 of them were BlackBerry OS products. ThatвЂ™s the word from Gartner, which recently published its Q4 smartphone rankings. Today, BlackberryвЂ™s hardware business is in ruins, with a global market share of 0.0%.

The firm was expanding its businesses in other countries and it had ridden a wave of success to become the company most people thought of when they thought about business smartphones. The company commanded almost 25% of the global smartphone market, a higher share than any company other than Nokia.
